When you style Michelle Obama for a presidential inauguration, all eyes turn toward you for your next move. Sergio Hudson, the L.A.-based designer, has moved on to showing his spring 2021 collection this past week. Hudson’s designs can be described as luxury ready-to-wear pieces. His creations are often colorful and retro for the modern woman.

In keeping with the pattern from his collections of the past, this new collection follows suit with a trend in monochromatic looks. The color palette for Hudson’s spring 2021 collection is composed of white, black, pumpkin orange, honey gold, teal and magenta. As an added bonus, the vibrant hues have managed to make Hudson’s Instagram very aesthetically pleasing, each color represented in a different row. Every designated color has at least two looks featuring a dress, a skirt and/or a wide-leg pant. The designs feature the use of knit wool, cotton, crepe and, most notably, silk. The silk adds a note of richness to the ‘60s inspired looks, elevating the outfits to very sophisticated ensembles.

The collection features a crepe and silk jumpsuit in three different colors. Another stand-out from the collection is a monochromatic orange bolero jacket with shoulder pads and a matching high-waisted pencil skirt. As per the yellow displays, a double breasted oversized blazer dress separated itself from the other more effeminate garments. Hudson’s most casual design is a yellow knit cropped sweater alongside a pair of matching asymmetrical draped crepe wide-leg pants. Nearly every outfit is accented by Hudson’s signature hoop-buckle belt, made famous by Michelle Obama’s inauguration outfit.

Hudson’s designs exude ‘powerful woman’ energy. It’s no surprise he’s had powerhouse celebrities like Beyonce and Kendall Jenner in some of his creations. It will be interesting to see how he develops as a designer when and if he decides to branch out creatively.
