“Euphoria” burst onto the screen in 2019 and became an instant hit. With acclaimed actress and producer Zendaya at the helm of every headline, the HBO show had a lot of buzz going into its premiere season. “Euphoria” created a darker, edgier, sexier version of your high school experience.
The cast features stellar acting from Alexa Demie, Angus Cloud, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Hunter Schafer and Sydney Sweeney, who all became superstars overnight and left a glossy mark on the world. “Euphoria” inspired a generation to go big with their makeup, developing a trend for bold-colored glossy eye, glitter highlight, and bedazzled facial embellishments.
In an interview with “Harper’s Bazaar,” Heidi Bivens, the “Euphoria” costume designer, explains her thought process going into dressing each character. “In the first season, I did approach it all in an almost academic way – I wanted it to be realistic that the characters could afford everything they were wearing … by [the second season], it had become clear to audiences that Euphoria was not set up to be visually realistic.” For season two, “Euphoria” gave us some important fashion trends. Although you probably dressed a bit different in high school, you can draw from their fashion choices to embrace your inner high drama, high fashion, teenage it-girl … maybe without all the crying, drugs and gun violence.
If you’re going to dress up, dare to live in Maddy’s dream of the high neck, metallic plum sequin Norman Norell column dress. Evening wear can be flashy and eye-catching, while also maintaining a subtlety with the help of a demure color. If you work hard enough (and have generous enough of an employer) this dream dress can be yours too.
If you’re going to dress down, you can still dress it up for your hometown holiday party. For New Year’s Eve, Maddy wore a black, high neck, cut-out dress exposing her back and showing off a keyhole neckline. The high school character wore a pair of matching black, fingerless gloves and a pair of strappy Amina Muaddi heels.
The world is in the midst of the Y2K revival. Fashion designers and connoisseurs alike are drawing inspiration for their aesthetics from 2000s culture and trends. As an icon of this time, Paris Hilton made athleisure into a staple within everyone’s closets, popularizing the Juicy Couture velour tracksuit. In this scene, you can see Maddy Perez and Cassie Howard with a Euphoria spin on the classic tracksuit. Respectively, they are wearing similar lavender and teal matching sets with cropped cardigan-style tops.
In the development of her villain storyline, Cassie primps and polishes herself in an effort to get noticed by Nate Jacobs. In an effort to get his attention though, she attracts the attention of all of her peers who compare her new look to that of a “country music star.” The blue gingham bustier dress was, in fact, a custom dress inspired by Dolly Parton. The pleated skirt of the dress has a contrasting pattern that complements the busy gingham on top.
Lexi Howard dresses as though she’s dressing to be first lady of The United States … or more likely president. Her youthful, preppy chic style evokes the aesthetics of designer brands like Miu Miu, Alice + Olivia, Chanel, and Tory Burch. Her looks are simple and clean usually with a pop of color or bold pattern.
Skin is in … if you’ve got it flaunt it. Cassie, Maddy and Kat are known for celebrating their curves with clothes that show off their figures. Embrace the skin you are in and show it off with crop tops, mini skirts, backless dresses, plunging necklines, bralettes, sheer fabric, exposed midriffs and bare shoulders.
Each of these trends is rather attainable for viewers and serve as potential trends we can see in the fashion world. It would be highly unlikely that you wouldn’t see all of these girls at every fashion week for the next decade. As we dive a bit more into their characters’ personal style of each character, we have an idea of what we can expect from them and their character development for the third season.
